Developments in international access politics in higher education in Denmark, Flanders, Sweden

While at start internationalization was hot and most of the program’s were in English, in different countries there are certain other developments.

In Denmark the government wants to decrease the inflow of foreign students. From the year of 2011-2012 higher education institutions will be reduced in their budget if they have more foreign students then Danish students abroad, this rule is already in power from 2003, but until now wasn’t applied. In 2009-2010 there were 6.100 foreign students on temporary basis in Denmark, while 4.500 Danish students were abroad. The Danish institutes of higher education are bold about this, and afraid this will stimulate exchange programs of lower quality to increase exchange of Danish students with foreign countries, and the Danish student union is afraid present exchange programs will be repealed.

Flanders is afraid of a massive influx of Dutch students, because it’s regards students with lower results who flight to Flanders. But EU regulations forbid to discriminate between European students. They will think it over until they now how big the flow is.

International students pass Sweden enormously, with a decrease of 73% for master programs, after Sweden has giving free the possibility of asking fees. For most education programs its between 8.500 and 14.500 (Study in Sweden).
