Migrant children and education: public consultation underlines common challenges across the EU
As the European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth, Ján Figel', underlined, "
Children with a migrant background present particular challenges to education authorities, but it is remarkable that from north to south, east to west, the countries of the EU all face similar problems in this area. For me it is therefore clear that by working together, we can achieve lasting and meaningful reforms in our school systems that will ensure the successful social integration and education of children with a migrant background."
The Commission has now published a summary report and copies of the responses received in the public consultation, which it had launched in July 2008 with a Green Paper entitled 'Migration and mobility: Challenges and opportunities for EU education systems' and which was open until December 2008.
