Guide on Comenius Assistentships in 6 languages

Each year up to 1 500 future teachers in Europe go abroad with the help of the Comenius programme to be an assistant teacher. They spend between 3 to 10 months in a school in another European country, assist with classroom teaching, support school projects and often teach their native language. Based on the experiences of assistants, schools and the National Agencies in charge of the programme in each country, the European Commission has put together a new guidebook. It will help both assistants and host schools to get the most out of this experience.
On a Comenius assistantship abroad future teachers learn more about another European country and its education system while at the same time improving their teaching skills. During their time as assistants they have the opportunity to teach their own language at the host schools. This not only improves the language skills of pupils working with the assistant but also gives them an additional motivation to learn languages and to go abroad later in life.

A Comenius Assistantship does not stop at the classroom door. This is why the guide also describes how host schools can prepare for the assistantship and how they can support the assistant to make a real contribution to the academic and also social life of the school and its local community.

The guide gives advice to the assistants on how to cope with the challenges of integrating into the host school and local community and of adapting to the various teaching situations. It provides plenty of practical tips and ready-made teaching ideas.

The guide is available on-line in six languages – English, French, German, Italian, Polish and Spanish - in easily searchable electronic format. Feel free to use and print any part which corresponds to your needs.
