Voussiliou started her career as a lawyer, and was an alected Member of the House of Representatives in Cyprus from 1996 to 2006.
Since 2008 she was the replacement commissioner (of Kyprianou) of the EC of Barosso of Health since March 2008. On 27 of Nov 2009 Barroso nominated her as the new Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism & Youth.
From her former staff at the Health Department Despina Spanou, Zenon Severis, Frederic Oblin, Chrissa Mela, Loucia Petridou and her two drivers remain in her new Education cabinet.

* The literacy level (1 in 5 of 15 years old) & the early school leaving (1 in 6)
* Further breaking down of gender stereotypesm by example boys as teacherjobs and girls in science and technology.
* Multilingualism as a passport to a large world of opportunity
* Major initiative to boost up mobility
* Nurturing cultural expression and creativity for all, starting with a Green Paper 2010.

She is respected for her openness and willingness to collaborate with NGOs and civil society organsations and has been Vice president of the European Liberal Democrats and Reform Party. The European Parliament approved the nomination on 11-2-2010.
