The European Citizens' Initiative is one of the major innovations of the Lisbon Treaty: allowing one million European citizens to ask the Commission to propose new legislation it enhances active citizenship and strengthens the democratic legitimacy of public institutions. On 14 July, the Committee will hold an initial exchange of views on the Commission proposal for a regulation on the European Citizens' Initiative on which Mrs. Róża Gräfin von Thun und Hohenstein (PPE) will draft a legislative opinion.
