Diversity and social responsibility

Starting in 2011 together with ECNAIS we will focus on diversity on the European level as a specific issue. Every month we will focus on another member state. Formerly we have published info around this subject under the domain of Other (Media, ICT, Youth, Sport & Citizenship) so earlier reports abouth this theme you can find there. As well as when it comes to content issues of Gender and discrimination resp. Human rights and values, under the header of Global content issues. Reports of national situation about integration of migrants & diversity in education can also be find under news of Member States.

Two sides of diversity: horizontal (social responsibility & contribution) & vertical (policy space)

Diversity has two sides. In horizontal perspective the social responsibility of schools towards giving every child - regarding and including its background - its right to grow as a participative citizen of the 21 Century. In vertical perspective the space within state policy for diversity between schools and the level of school autonomy and freedom of parents to choose and setting up schools.

By bringing these two in relation to each other we want to enhance the perspective of diversity as a chance. On EU level diversity is characterized as a key asset of Europe, which you can simply realise by looking at its diversity of cultures and languages. But at the same time the values around it are under pressure. The social responsibility of independent schools is not something they are walking away from per se. They are themselves a result of diversity on state level and enrich the horizon of educational solutions, curricula and didactical approach. Althoug they may not be directed especially towards integration, they enrich the possibilities for diversity, especially when it comes to the adaptation in member states of the Europe wide valued key competences, including 4 transversal competences.
